Solar Eclipse in Latvia – 20 March 2015

20 March will bring a partial solar eclipse visible in Latvia. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, fully or partially covering the Sun's disc.

During a total eclipse, darkness falls for several minutes, while during a partial eclipse the Sun appears as a circle with a section missing.

At the maximum phase of the eclipse on 20 March, the Sun in Latvia will appear as a crescent with its tips pointing upwards.

The eclipse in Riga will begin at 10:56,
its maximum phase will occur from 12:01 to 12:08 (depending on the region of Latvia),
and the eclipse will end at 13:14.

The maximum eclipse phase, indicating the covered portion of the Sun's diameter, will be 0.77 in Riga, 0.80 in north-western Latvia and 0.74 in the south-east.
The next partial solar eclipse will be visible in 2021, with a phase of only 0.31 in Riga. The next significant solar eclipse in Latvia comparable to this one will occur in 2026, with a phase of 0.84.

Total solar eclipse — occurs when the Moon's full shadow reaches the Earth's surface.
Annular solar eclipse — occurs when the tip of the Moon's full shadow lies above a point on the Earth's surface.
Partial solar eclipse — occurs when the Moon's penumbra reaches the Earth's surface.
