Air-to-water heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular for building heating systems. This is one of the most innovative and suitable solutions for replacing geothermal heat pumps. Unlike geothermal heat pumps, no additional land is required for installing a horizontal loop and no deep boreholes are needed for a vertical probe; an outdoor compressor unit is sufficient and can be installed practically anywhere – on a wall, roof or balcony. Expensive construction work is not required, there is no need for fuel storage space, and the system is fire-safe because no combustion processes take place.

An air-to-water heat pump prepares the heat transfer medium for the heating system and also provides domestic hot water. Heat pumps are available in the following versions: monobloc, heat pump with separate hydro module, and heat pump with separate hydro module plus integrated hot water tank.

The DAIKIN Altherma 3 air-to-water heat pump series is a third-generation heat pump series. The models in this series operate with R32 refrigerant, which is more environmentally friendly and allows the units to achieve higher energy efficiency. Electric heating elements from 3 to 9 kW are available with the units. The internal hydro module includes a built-in circulation pump, heat exchanger, expansion vessel and control system. With the help of the compressor, it can operate even in frost down to -25°C.

Daikin Altherma low-temperature monobloc

A monobloc is the right solution when a simple system is required, consisting of one outdoor unit without indoor units.

  • Everything is combined in one outdoor unit
  • Fast and simple installation, as only water pipes need to be routed from the outdoor unit into the building
  • Saves space, as the units are installed only outside the building
  • Anti-freeze protection for hydraulic components.

Why choose a monobloc system?

  • The heating system does not take up space inside the building
  • Fast installation: only water pipes need to be routed from the outdoor unit into the building, as all hydraulic components are located in the outdoor unit.

The outdoor-only Daikin Altherma monobloc is available in the following versions:

  • heating only, or heating and cooling
  • with or without a base plate heater
  • single-phase or three-phase
  • 6 kW, 8 kW, 11 kW, 14 kW or 16 kW

Backup heater, a separately installed 6 kW heater for 6–8 kW models is available by special order. Standard built-in heater for 11–14–16 kW models.

Daikin Altherma low-capacity models (from 6 to 8 kW) are equipped with a swing compressor. Over the last 10 years, swing compressors used in thousands of outdoor units have set the benchmark in energy efficiency by virtually eliminating leakage and friction.

Scroll compressors, used in Daikin Altherma monobloc models from 11 to 16 kW, are compact, robust and quiet, ensuring optimum operational reliability (no valves or built-in oscillating levers) and efficiency thanks to low initial flow and a constant compression ratio. This technology is used in many Daikin heat pumps.

Anti-freeze protection for hydraulic components, to protect the water pipes from freezing during winter, all hydraulic components are insulated and a special programme is used that switches on the pump and backup heater when required. This prevents the water temperature from falling below the freezing point and removes the need to add glycol to the water pipes.
